AN OVERVIEW OF THE MOST IMPORTANT INSURANCES

INSURANCE POLICIES FOR OWNERS/ SKIPPERS/ CREW/ CHARTERED SAILORS

FOREIGN HEALTH INSURANCE

FHI protects you from unforeseeable illness costs on your journey. Before you buy this insurance, you should check with your health insurance provider in what form and for how much you are covered for any costs that may be incurred during the upcoming holiday. If you are traveling to a non-European country, then FHI is always a good idea. Even within Europe, the insurance conditions are not the same. Information is important here!

OCCUPATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE

Here you are covering yourself should you not be able to carry on working as a result of an accident or illness.

BOAT LIABILITY INSURANCE

If the skipper or crew inflict damage upon a third party or cause possible damage to the boat as water sportspersons, the boat liability insurance comes into effect. It is important to note that damages which are inflicted on the crew by themselves are included in such a policy. The lower limit of the sum insured should be a flat rate of at least € 4 million. There are cheaper tariffs for dinghies.

BOAT BREAKDOWN COVERAGE

The BBC pays out for damage to your own vessel and its accessories, theft, vandalism, grounding, collision, broken masts, storm damage, etc. Similar to a car, it is also possible to exclude certain risks. Total loss insurance would be sensible for dinghies.

CHARTER BREAKDOWN / CHARTER CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGE INSURANCE

If the charter company makes a claim against the crew due to the fact that

1) the chartered vessel was damaged on the cruise and/or

2) as a result that the boat could not be made available, at least not at the right time to the following crew then this insurance covers the loss of income incurred by the charter company.

CHARTER DEPOSIT INSURANCE

If the chartered vessel is damaged during the cruise, this insurance protects the crew against the loss of deposit.

OCCUPANT ACCIDENT INSURANCE

Here, a parallel can be drawn with car insurance. With OAI, co-sailors are protected should they have an accident on board. Enquire as to whether shore leave is also insured!

PRIVATE LIABILITY INSURANCE

This insurance covers claims from third parties against the insured.
Damages to one's own boat usually are not covered.

OURNEY / CHARTER CANCELLATION INSURANCE

This insurance covers the costs incurred when, for urgent reasons – check exactly what is meant by urgent reasons – one cannot travel or rather must cancel. IMPORTANT: Make note of self-contribution! With charter cancellation insurance, make sure that this also protects you if the skipper is absent and somebody else must step in.

LIFE RISK INSURANCE

If the insured person should die, surviving dependents are protected. ATTENTION: In some policies, accidents leading to death are excluded! Examine properly.

SKIPPER LIABILITY INSURANCE

If a crew member or the vessel is damaged due to misconduct on the part of the skipper and claims are made against the skipper, then the skipper's liability insurance kicks in. Some insurance policies protect policy holders, even when they have been grossly negligent.

PRIVATE ACCIDENT INSURANCE

Personal accident insurance protects the policyholder against the additional monetary consequences of an accident, which are not covered by the health insurance provider or health insurance policy. Before signing the contract, you should check with your health insurance provider

1) whether the costs of accidents that occur when sailing are completely covered and

2) whether other costs could possibly still occur from accidents, which are not covered.

LEGAL EXPENSES INSURANCE

Legal expenses insurance for sailors and boat owners or expectant boat owners. This is a specially developed insurance for these situations. When signing up to such insurance, precise information is needed.
